Bremen

Welcome to Bremen’s showpiece, the historical marketplace!

It was built in the middle of the Bremer dune, where the city
was originally founded as the settlement “Bremun” (= on the
edge).

According to legend, fishing families saw a hen and its
chicks sitting on the dune and decided it would be safe to build
there.

You can find the hen on the front of the Town Hall.

The first recorded Bremen citizen was Countess Emma.

She gifted the city the Bürgerweide (= people’s meadow).

The Roland figure symbolises freedom and market rights and also reflects the city’s Hanseatic status.
